The Dordogne is the former "Perigord" French province, located on the road from Paris to the Pyrenees, it is also at the same distance from the Pole and from the Equator, and it is crossed by the transeuropean and by the 45th parallel. The area thus benefits from a rather temperate climate, which makes it a very pleasant region all the year round. It also offers very varied landscapes, as prove the four Perigord: white (Perigueux) for the stones, green (Nontron) for the countryside, purple (Bergerac) for the wines, black (Sarlat) for the density of ilexes (holm oaks).

The most visited area is to be seen on the right of the picture; the Wednesday and Saturday morning markets take place here. If you do not plan to stay for long, do not miss it, it is well-known for being one of the most beautiful markets in France.. Sarlat officially became a "city" in the 8th century. During the 100-year war, it served as a frontier between the zone bearing allegiance to the King of England and the zone bearing allegiance to the King of France. Sarlat became an English town in 1360, and was freed 10 years later by Bertrand Du Guesclin. Under the reign of Charlemagne a Benedictine monastery (Abbey Saint Sauveur) was built; in the 12th century, the Saint Sacerdos abbey-church replaced the Carolingian church. |
Click here to discover the Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral and the many beautiful Dordogne Roman churches.. Saint Sacerdos became a cathedral in 1317. It was rebuilt in the 17th century to repair all destructions of the Wars of Religion. Sarlat became a prosperous town when the train arrived in the region.

SARLAT is a true invitation to strolling in time. Do not miss the beautiful Maison de la Boétie and, in the Rue des Consuls, you will see a fountain and a wonderful staircase in the house ooposite. Sarlat is the capital town of the "Black" Perigord; the heritage from the past is here perfectly preserved: Sarlat is the town in Europe with the highest number of heritage listed monuments per sqm. 1000 years of architecture are to be discovered in its old streets: roofs covered with "lauzes" (flat stones), yellow-stone walls, etc. Elegance and serenity prevail in Sarlat. |

You'll enter Sarlat to the South, through the "Pontet" leading you to drive further to discover the valley of the Dordogne river (also called valley of the chateaux: Beynac, Castelnaud, Puymartin or stunning gardens, such as Marqueyssac, Eyrignac, the water gardens in Carsac; one of the most beautiful sites to be visited here is undoubtedly the exceptional fortress of Commarque: even if it is partly ruined, the feudal chateau overlooking the village and the valley of the Beune is really worth a detour!
Sarlat spreads out to hosts its 10,000 inhabitants (40,000 for the department). The Dordogne administrative capital is Périgueux (31,193 inhabitants). The two other main towns are Bergerac (26,053 inhabitants) and Nontron (3,500 inhabitants).
